Student Fieldwork Placements

The Student Fieldwork Placements are no longer available under current funding (2016-19) for the Centre from the Attorney-General's Department.

Below are details of students who were successful in winning a placement in the period 2013-16.

Succesful applicants in 2015-16 were:

  • Ms Johana McDonald ANU (mentored by Mr Craig Elliott of the Central Land Council)
  • Ms Alexandra Green ANU (mentored by Dr Tim Pilbrow, Native Title Services Victoria)
  • Mr Stuart Russell UQ (mentored by Dr Bill Kruse, Kimberely Land Council)

Organisations that have hosted students include:

  • Cape York Land Council
  • Central Desert Native Title Services
  • Kimberley Land Council
  • Ngaanyatjarra Council
  • Northern Land Council
  • Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation

Thanks to these organisations and also to the anthropologists who have previously hosted the placements including Dr David Brooks, Dr Brendan Corrigan, Ms Imogen Dexter, Dr Bill Kruse, Dr Heather Lynes, Dr Kevin Murphy, Ms Olivia Norris, Dr Kingsley Palmer, Dr Tony Redmond and Associate Professor Lee Sackett.


2015 Student Fieldwork Placements

In the Kimberley: Nadia, Tony Redmond (mentor) and student placement, Marian Faa.

Applications for the 2015 round of Student Fieldwork Placements  have now closed.

The successful receipients are Natalie Bell (La Trobe University) and Marian Faa (University of Queensland).

Natalie will accompany Associate Professor Lee Sackett (consultant anthropologist) and Sean Calderwood from Central Desert Native Title Services on fieldwork in Central Australia in July 2015.

Marian will undertake her placement in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia with Dr Tony Redmond (Consultant Anthropologist) and Nadia Ronay of the Kimberley Land Council.


2014 Student Fieldwork Placements

Students undertaking placements in 2014 were Zoe Coombe (ANU), Lachlan Summers (UQ) and Jane Urquhart (La Trobe University). 


2013 Student Fieldwork Placements

Successful applicants in 2013 program were Ms Hannah Neumayer and Mr Isaac Daniels, both studying at the ANU.

Hannah undertook a placement with Central Desert Native Title Services traveling to Alice Springs, Warburton, Wiluna and on to Kalgoorlie. During her placement Hannah was mentored by Dr Heather Lynes (Central Desert Native Title Services) and Associate Professor Lee Sackett (consultant anthropologist).

Issac accompanied Dr David Brooks (Ngaanyatjarra Council) conducting field research through the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in Western Australia. As well as field visits and spending time at Ngaanyatjarra Council offices, Isaac spent time with Aboriginal rangers and school children learning about some of the development and employment opportunities created through native title.
