The MAAPD (Advanced) program will provide you with the research training you need to engage in professional research activities in the development sector and to develop the research experience needed for entry into a PhD program.

Graduates of the MAAPD (Advanced) program will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Design research activities, including identifying and reviewing relevant literature, developing research questions and identifying appropriate research methods;
  • Communicate research findings to relevant audiences in the form of a sub-thesis.

Who should do the MAAPD (Advanced) program

The MAAPD (Advanced) program is designed for those who have an interest in learning about and applying social research methods in a development context. The thesis involves a research project supervised by MAAPD program staff. The choice of supervisor will depend upon your area of research interest. The thesis is designed for MAAPD students who have demonstrated their capability for independent research by achieving solid grades during the coursework program. For entry, we require at least an average score of 70% in your coursework grades, an academic staff member willing to supervise your project, and permission by the course convenor. Students should flag their interest in undertaking a thesis project to the course convenor early during their coursework.

The MAAPD (Research) program can be completed over one-year on a part-time basis, or over 1 semester on a full-time basis. Note that field research will normally require ethics clearance and may involve costs to the student on top of course fees. Suitability of field research must be discussed ahead of commencement with the supervisor. Further information regarding the MAAPD thesis can be found here: Program and Courses
