Applications are invited for the ANU Indigenous Arid Zone Archaeobotanical Studies Supplementary PhD Scholarship with a preference for candidate undertaking archaeobotanical research in Arid Australia.

The scholarship is supported by philanthropic gifts to the Australian National University (ANU). Applications close on Monday 24 August 2026.

The PhD candidate will develop independent projects on specific themes related to the development of plant macrofossil research into Australian arid zone foodways. Within this research program, there is flexibility in the choice of studied archaeological sites and regions.

The PhD will be supervised by Dr Anna Florin in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology.

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the School of Archaeology and Anthropology. The School combines four streams of social research and teaching: anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology and the interdisciplinary field of development studies. Collectively the School is engaged with understanding past and present human experience in diverse and transforming social contexts.

The School offers an innovative range of programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with particular strengths in archaeological science, biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, Australian Indigenous studies, medical anthropology, visual anthropology, and applied and participatory development.

ANU is the most research-intensive university in Australia and staff are energetic teachers as well as active researchers working on projects across remote and metropolitan Australia, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Europe, South America and India.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Anna Florin at anna.florin@anu.edu.au to discuss their research proposal prior to applying.
