In September 2020, Dave McGregor retired after 39 years working in the School as the SoAA Lab Technician and general jack-of-all-trades. Dave is well-loved by all for his patience, kindness and ability to fix absolutely any problem. His hard work saw the smooth preparation of countless fieldtrips, the installation of numerous pieces of complex lab equipment, and contributed to the efficient day-to-day running of the school.
In 2018, Dave was awarded the CASS Award for Outstanding Leadership in recognition of his tireless work following the AD Hope flood and the School’s subsequent move to the Banks Building. Then in 2019, Master of Museum and Heritage Studies students curated an exhibition Dave’s Faves: A Life in and out of the Lab which showcased stories from Dave’s career.
We held Dave’s retirement party by the lake on 25th September 2020 and it was attended by many current and past staff members - in spite of the very brisk weather. Many scandalous stories were exchanged and laughter ensued as Dave was presented with a This is Your Life Book filled with entertaining contributions and photos of Dave’s long career from colleagues all over the globe.
We all wish Dave a very happy and well-deserved retirement and hope he enjoys the extra time he now has to spend rock climbing.
