Comparative Austronesian Relationship Terminologies

This is an exercise in what may be deemed ‘old fashioned’ anthropology. Based on a database of approximately 450 Austronesian terminologies and a methodology that defines particular relational patterns, I outline the formal structures of Austronesian relationship terminologies extending from Taiwan to Timor and from Madagascar to Hawaii, concentrating on specific patterns whose distribution distinguishes different parts of the Austronesian-speaking world. Then, if time remains, I sketch various migration ‘pathways’ for the variable distribution of particular patterns based on the coincidence of formal and linguistic evidence.
