Embodying Piety: Disciplining Body and Lifestyle of Cadarese in Indonesia
This study focuses on the efforts of cadarese (face-veiled women) in Indonesia, particularly those who attach themselves to Tablighi Jam??at and diverse Salafi movements, to be true Muslima (Muslim women) by disciplining their bodies and controlling their lifestyle. Whereas much has been written about headcovering in Indonesia (especially the jilbab) little research has been done on the cadarese, especially in the context of Tablighi Jamat and Salafi movements which have not been studies form the perspective of their growing popularity with women. My research shows that it is wrong to understand the existence of cadar (face-veil) and cadarese in Indonesia only in relation to the discussion of terrorism, the symbol of male oppression, and the Arabisation of Indonesia, as media outlets and scholars often assume.
It is my thesis this prejudice does not address the real dynamics of the life of cadarese themselves, especially their aspiration to embody the concept of piety, and their zeal to be active agents in their communities.
