Presented online only. Zoom details below.

Encounters with the Indian criminal justice system: Cases of queer dating violence in India

This presentation will share findings from my on-going research project on 'Risk and Intimacy: Dating Violence through Gay and MSM (Men who have sex with Men) dating applications in contemporary India'. It will specifically focus on perceptions and attitudes towards, and encounters with, the criminal justice system by those who have faced physical and sexual assault and financial fraud and extortion. The presentation will look at contradictions between queer affirmative laws in India and the newly implemented Indian Penal Code (2024) regarding non-consensual same sex intercourse, and the way violated bodies are read, scrutinized and deciphered by the police. This talk will be of interest to scholars of Sexuality studies, South Asian studies, and those working at the intersection of queerness and law.

Speaker:
Chandan Bose is Assistant Professor, Department of Liberal Arts, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. His publications include Encountering Craft: Methodological approaches from Anthropology, Art History, and Design, and Perspectives on Work, Home, and Identity from Artisans in Telangana: Conversations Around Craft.
