PossumLab: Thinking through Human-Animal Relationships with "Man's Best"

Man's Best, created by Pornsak Pichetshote and Jesse Lonergan, BOOM! Studios,  2024

Presented in person and online - details below.

PossumLab is a space to explore creative ethnographic work. Every semester, we read two comics and use them as a way to explore anthropological concepts. In the first instalment for 2026, Kylie Dolan and V. Chitra invite you to read and discuss Boom Studios' "Man's Best" -- a comic about three emotional support pets living on the Starship Horizon–a spacecraft searching for an alternative Earth. In the process, Kylie and Chitra will talk about thinking with dogs in their ethnographic research.

A PDF copy of the comic's first two chapters is attached.  We encourage attendees to read the comic before the event.

Speakers:
V. Chitra is an anthropologist at the ANU School of Archaeology and Anthropology, and her research sits at the intersection of environmental studies and science technology studies. Chitra explores how canine governance mirrors broader patterns of citizenship and belonging in Singapore, where access to space and security depends on demonstrating proper doggy conduct.

Kylie Dolan is a PhD candidate at the ANU School of Archaeology and Anthropology. Her research explores danger, kinship, and their transformations in the large Aboriginal township of Maningrida in North Australia. For too long she tried to ignore the town's dogs – their mischief, their messages, malnourishment. But they smell spirits, share sweat with humans, and play an undeniable role in organising social life.

Together, we're interested in what dogs reveal about care, companionship, and belonging.
