In this seminar I reflect upon the challenges of conceiving and writing See How We Roll: Enduring Exile Between Desert and Urban Australia (Duke, 2021), an intimate ethnography centred on the experience of a Warlpiri woman pursuing a new life in Adelaide. The book explores her evolving life situation through our decades of friendship as well as changing social circumstances and government policy. Fieldwork on the move in anxious times calls out multiple modes of partial comparative understanding—via archives, memory work, critical self-scrutiny, and writing that is attuned to both fragility and the limits of what can be known.
