Students, Schools, State: Interacting Circles of Educational Desire in Rural Odisha

Abstract

The 2009 Compulsory Education Act radically restructured state commitment to universal schooling across India, particularly for marginalised rural Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste children. Though rural Odishan school buildings are more visible, inside, students are often present and teachers absent. In this presentation I examine Mayurbhanj District students' engagement with school and argue rural schools can best be understood as interactions of educational desire amongst three discrete sets of stakeholders: state, local provider and students. Given their pivotal roles in enacting schooling,  much can be learned by bringing students enactments to the fore.
