Screening of 'Remembering Yayayi'

Marlene Nampitjinpa reflects on her childhood at Yayayi while viewing Ian Dunlop’s archival footage.

As part of the 2023 Anthony Forge Memorial Lecture, the film 'Remembering Yayayi' will be screened on Wednesday 6th December. All welcome. No registration required

'Remembering Yayayi’ features Marlene Nampitjinpa sharing her memories of Yayayi with anthropologist Fred Myers. The film reflects on a pivotal moment in the history of Pintupi people when they moved to the remote community in Central Australia to get away from the difficulties of living at the larger permanent government settlement of Papunya. It features archival footage taken by Ian Dunlop when he visited Yayayi in 1974. In the film, Ian Dunlop and Marlene Nampitjinpa, a woman who appears throughout the footage — as a lively young girl, share their memories of Yayayi with anthropologist Fred Myers.

For this screening we will be joined by Marlene Nampitijinpa, Fred Myers and Pip Deveson (producer).

Fred Myers is the Silver Professor of Anthropology at New York University. Myers has been involved in research with, and writing about, Western Desert Aboriginal people since 1973. His books include Pintupi Country, Pintupi Self: Sentiment, Place and Politics among Western Desert Aborigines (1986) and a book on the acrylic painting movement, Painting Culture: The Making of an Aboriginal High Art (2002).
