Matt undertakes research in applied Aboriginal heritage conservation in partnership with the Muthi Muthi, Ngiyampaa and Barkindji Advisory Group and Aboriginal rangers of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area. Matt was appointed as an expert member to the ACT Heritage Council and works as a casual sessional academic. His ethos is centred around collaborations with Aboriginal Communities to protect, conserve and celebrate Aboriginal heritage on Country.
He has a strong interest in the philosophy, practice and science of Aboriginal site conservation; arid and semi-arid Pleistocene archaeology, heritage co-design and archaeological photography, including archival recording. Matt has also actively promoted Australian cultural heritage via regulatory guidelines, consultant workshops, and archaeological standards.
Before completing an advanced Master's in Archaeological and Evolutionary Science at ANU, Matt worked as an archaeologist in the eastern Mediterranean, managed the archaeological laboratories at Flinders University and worked as a senior heritage consultant on a diverse range of transport, water, Defence, power, mining and subdivision projects around Australia. More recently, he managed cultural heritage teams for the protection and conservation of Aboriginal heritage in South Australia and Tasmania.
